The Curators Collective (CC) is a coalition of National Pavilion Curators from the Venice Architrecture Biennale.
It was initially formed in relation to the 17th Venice Biennale Architettura (2020). In preparation for that exhibition at the height of the global pandemic, curators from across the globe gathered for the first CC meeting and confirmed their shared interest in turning the Biennale’s postponement into an opportunity to express greater solidarity among architectural practitioners worldwide. In keeping with this spirit of prioritising open-ended processes over products, CC meetings have continued to evolve into an ongoing dialogue and exploration of collaborative possibilities.
Since the early dialogues in 2020, the CC has met regularly as a body of 51 countries. The shared goal is to investigate new avenues for fulfilling the Biennale’s potential as a platform for synergistic and accessible collaboration, better suited to the challenges we collectively face in this era of global crises.
As CC founder Hae-Won Shin, curator of the Korean pavilion 2021, notes: “The Curators Collective opens up a new kind of space for engagement between Curators and Commissioners of all Participating Countries, bridging social, geographical and linguistic divides. “
