Welcome to Lisbon!
Coinciding with the celebration of ARCOlisboa, from May 29 to June 1, Lisbon will experience its Art Week, during which the city will take centre stage with an intense cultural programme. In addition to the usual tours of museums, cultural centres and galleries, exhibitions of great international importance, special openings, private visits and meetings between collectors and art professionals will take place. A unique energy will flow through the city during these days, with the arrival of ARCOlisboa acting as a catalyst for a scene that continues to grow and reinvent itself.
At a time of special effervescence for contemporary art in Lisbon, the city celebrates the opening of the Museu de Arte Contemporânea Armando Martins (MACAM) and the long-awaited reopening of the renovated Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian (CAM), which holds exhibitions by artists such as Paula Rego, Adriana Varejão, Diana Policarpo or Julianknxx. These milestones are joined by other key institutions from the Lisbon scene: the MAAT—Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, with works by Jeff Wall, Ana León and Rui Moreira; the MAC/CCB, which brings together proposals by artists such as Nan Goldin, Chantal Akerman and holds a Peggy Guggenheim exhibition; and Culturgest, with works by Susan Hiller, Joe Scanlan and Fernando Marques Penteado. Lisbon’s artistic map is completed by the Coleção Berardo Museum, the National Museum of Contemporary Art—Museu do Chiado and the various initiatives promoted by EGEAC, which consolidate Lisbon as an essential cultural capital on the international circuit.
In this privileged context, ARCOlisboa will hold its eighth edition from May 29 to June 1 at the Cordoaria Nacional. With 83 participating galleries from 18 countries, the fair once again presents a project that reflects the richness and vitality of Portuguese art, in dialogue with the Spanish, European and Latin American art scenes.
The General Programme, central axis of the fair, brings together 61 galleries selected by the Organising Committee. In addition to established names such as Bruno Múrias, Cristina Guerra, Vera Cortês and Pedro Cera, there are new additions such as Travesía Cuatro, Duarte Sequeira and Set Espai d’Art. The selection is completed by international galleries such as Vermelho, Bianca Boeckel, Carlier | Gebauer and Leandro Navarro. Once again, the SOLO projects within the General Programme will offer in-depth presentations of the work of international artists such as Karlo Andrei Ibarra, Klaas Vanhee, Amélie Esterházy, Manuel M. Romero, Ricardo Cases, Sonia Navarro, Miki Leal, Justin Weiler and Diogo Pimentão.
The Opening Lisboa section will explore new artistic languages and spaces in order to bring new content to the fair. Through this programme, curated by Sofía Lanusse and Diogo Pinto, the fair will showcase the proposals of 17 galleries, offering an opportunity to explore their unique artistic visions, including: 4710 Gallery, winner of the OPENING Lisboa Award 2024; Beta Contemporary, Salgadeiras and Kandlhofer, who are participating for the second time; and ADZ gallery, Simo Bacar, Contemporary Cluster, Ackerman Clarke, Río & Meñaka, Moria galería, Dialogue and Salón Comunal who are taking part for the first time.
The artistic content of this year’s edition is rounded off by the programme As Formas do Oceano (The Shapes of the Ocean), curated by Paula Nascimento and Igor Simões, and will feature projects that focus on relations between Africa, its diaspora and other latitudes. It will include a total of five galleries: AA Gallery from Morocco; Afronova from South Africa; Christophe Person from France; Karla Osorio from Brazil; and Reiners Contemporary Art from Spain.
ARCOlisboa 2025 is organised by IFEMA MADRID and the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa.
