Loop Lab Busan is a new encounter dedicated to artists’ video and media art, taking place in South Korea from April 23 to 26, 2025. Based on Loop Barcelona’s pioneering model—blending a festival, fair, and forum—this initiative is organized in collaboration between Loop Barcelona, A-Fluxion, the Busan Museum of Art, and Busan Metropolitan City.
Set against the backdrop of Busan’s dynamic fusion of arts, culture, and technology, Loop Lab Busan embodies the city’s innovative and creative spirit. This new initiative seeks to nurture a thriving local and regional art community, foster meaningful international connections, and strengthen Busan’s position as a key hub for the future of contemporary art in Asia.
Loop Lab Busan Fair will be held from April 24 to 26 at the Grand Josun Busan Hotel, featuring a carefully curated selection of over 25 international and local galleries. The fair will present a compelling international panorama of contemporary creation, showcasing works that range from artists’ videos and films to broader expressions of digital and media art—highlighting experimentation, storytelling, new technologies, and cross-cultural perspectives.
Pioneers in expanded and intermedia art, such as the late Italian-American artist Aldo Tambellini (Topos Studio, Seoul) or the Korean-American painter Jin Meyerson (Perrotin, Paris & multiple locations), are presented alongside acclaimed contemporary media artists such as Cemile Sahin (Esther Schipper, Berlin/Paris/Seoul) and Rachel Rossin (Rhizome, New York), as well as established figures in the digital realm, such as Refik Anadol (Pilevneli, Istanbul) and MAOTIK (TAEX, London).
The fair also features prominent names from the European moving image scene, such as the Irish artist Clare Langan (Anita Beckers, Frankfurt), Turkish artist Erkan Özgen (Galerie Zink, Seubersdorf), and Portuguese artist Jonathan Uliel Saldanha (Duarte Sequeira, Braga), whose practices expand on themes of memory, landscape, and sonic exploration while intersecting video, film and installation and crossing disciplines and formats.
Loop Lab Busan also focuses on the work of artists working across Southeast Asia, with contributions from both Korean and regional galleries—and beyond. From the Korean scene, the program features Kim Woong Hyun (Gallery 2, Seoul), Seo Young Chang (Amado Art Space, Seoul), Lee Bae (Johyun Gallery, Busan/Seoul), Lee Woongcheol (Ingahee Gallery, Seoul), and Lee Lee Nam (H.ART.ENT (ATO), Seoul). These are presented alongside international voices such as Yuki Okumura (Misako & Rosen, Tokyo), Chen Qiulin (A Thousand Plateaus Art Space, Chengdu), and Truong Cong Tung (Galerie BAO, Paris), each contributing distinct regional and conceptual perspectives.
A special selection of galleries from Catalonia reinforces the cultural ties between the sister cities of Busan and Barcelona. These galleries bring to Busan a generation of artists working at the intersection of video, film, performance, and new media, including the widely awarded and provocative Catalan filmmaker Albert Serra (Mayoral), emerging experimental filmmaker Valentina Alvarado Matos (FUGA), established performance artist Cecilia Bengolea (àngels barcelona), and rising digital studio Six N. Five (Load Gallery). Additional contributions from the European and Catalan scene include a premiere by Italian artist Giovanni Ozzola (Suburbia Contemporary), and recent works by Xavi Bou (galería SENDA) and Suwon Lee (Sorondo Projects).
In parallel with the Fair, Loop Lab Busan Exhibition will unfold across more than 20 presentations in artistic and cultural venues throughout the city, continuing through June. Meanwhile, the Loop Lab Busan Forum, held from April 24 to 25, will explore topics such as “Collecting Media Art” and “Art and Capital,” discussing the evolving landscape of art collecting in the digital age.
Also, as an affiliated program organized by the Busan Museum of Art, the International Forum, Future Museum Forum, and Asia Curators Forum will host a series of programs from April 23 to 26, bringing together international art leaders who will also take part in the city-wide Loop Lab Busan Festival.
