Join us at Bar Laika on Monday, May 12 from 6pm for the thirteenth edition of Playback with Gryphon Rue.
Gryphon Rue (b. New York, NY) is an artist and composer of electro-acoustic music. “A conjuror in stereo” (Electronic Sounds) who “plays with sonics in a way that a visual artist might manipulate light” (The Quietus), Rue has garnered critical acclaim for albums on labels such as Not Not Fun, Astral Editions, Tiger Sushi, and Soap Library. Rue has collaborated with Christine Sun Kim, Merche Blasco, Dean Wareham, and Benton C Bainbridge. As a 2023-2024 Jerome Artist resident at Roulette, he premiered Playing The Beetles with Ka Baird and Qasim Naqvi (Best New Experimental Music on Bandcamp), as well as North American premieres of Giusto Pio’s Motore Immobile and Ananta.
For Playback 0013, Rue presents his latest full-length album, I Keep My Diamond Necklace in a Pond of Sparkling Water (“Moves through strata of soft-edged yet distorted drones, blurring dream states with a poised, heightened awareness” - The Wire). Recorded in the forests and fields around the former bungalow colony deep in the Catskills, where the yipping of coyotes or a chorus of spring peepers is warped and wound around pulsing rhythms born from bowed chimes, singing saws, bowed electric bass, flutes, synths and gongs. Visit Rue’s website here.
Playback is a series of listening events curated by Kamran Sadeghi where record labels, musicians, composers, and producers feature recordings from their catalog, and premiere album pre-releases, archives, and other rarities.
